Bath Boating Station
Punts, Thames skiffs and Canadian canoes can be hired here by the hour or day for fun or exercise on the Avon. If you've never tried punting but fancy a go they'll give you instruction (very basic) as you set off. Most people head upstream from this Victorian boathouse as there's a pub in that direction and it's easier to come home downstream! All the boats are of the traditional wooden variety, most having been built on the premises, some being around one hundred years old. Refreshments are available too at this idiosyncratic establishment, and there are rooms available for bed and breakfast.
We spent a lovely day on the river at Bath. The rowing boat was great fun. My sister and nephew and my own daughter. Lots of laughts, stopped half way up for our picnic. Then at the Mill pub for a coffee. Beautiful day. Beware of parking, as I did, in Forester road or others nearby. We didn't see the notice at the start of the road and warnings of being a permit holders only zone further on were very sparce. I got a parking ticket! Slightly dampened the otherwise lovely day.
Located a bit off of the beaten track, the Boating Station offers an opportunity to see a beautiful and somewhat less traveled part of Bath from a different perspective. The boats are made mostly on site, traditionally by the family of the current or former owners with some more than a century old. Boats such as punts, row boats and canoes are available. One can spend a good afternoon heading upstream to a pub located by a falls then backtrack downstream to the dam near Bath’s center. The current is slow making a paddle in either direction easy. The operators of the Boating Station are very accommodating and personable.
You can take a launch and be driven if you wish, but punting or rowing up the river is the greatest fun.
They tell you how to manage the boats if you haven't done it before and it's easy. Groups seem to spend the whole time laughing at their attempts to stay straight, then just around the corner you find couples looking very romantic as they glide gently along.
We had a wonderful afternoon and didn't get near falling in!
