Description

First opened in 1706 to provide a place to drink natural spring water, the Pump Room is decorated in 18th century style. Commanding a certain prestige with its double-storey windows and crystal chandeliers, the restaurant is still the place to be seen taking tea. There is no age restriction or dress code, but be prepared to pay as though you are a member of the elite. For afternoon tea, choose between High Tea, Cream Tea, and Tompion Tea. You may also still order natural spring water, which feeds the Roman Baths, contains 43 minerals, and is supposed to have curative properties.

we went for a birthday celebration lunch with family. The manager showed us to a table for two although we had booked for 4. There was a lovely atmosphere and the waitresses were friendly but not attentive. Service was slow and there was un unbelieveably long wait between courses (an hour between starter and main course). I don't have a big appetite but portions were very small. Overall the experience was overly expensive, not altogether satisfactory and would not recommend.

Done it once.... but never again!

We went to the Pump Rooms in end of March, We booked a table, and had a nice big table, the waitress came to take our order, then half way through she left.... then they forget several important parts of our cream teas, we orders 3 different teas and 2 the same and they only get 1 tea pot of the same (for the price of 2 teas (and went asked) they were rude and said yes that is ment to be (the tea pot was the same!) and Generally the Service was just disappointing. We paid a large amount for Cream tea... It wasn't Worth Â£17 a head, and i wouldn't reccomend to others. the setting ws good... but everything else was well either poor or mediocre

i go there all the time

i love this restaurant in bath i go there all the time most of the time i eat there once some times more a week . the most part i like about it is the food and the high standard it comes with and to top it off there is always the piano playing and that for me just sets the right mood !!!!!

Great ambience - but why eat there?

Check out what Fodors say! Great Room - dreadful value. I couldn't agree more. Service was aloof but OK, food enormously over priced, value just not there. There are alternatives. Why not just walk through, take in the beautiful room and spend more wisely elsewhere!

A great ambiance - shame about the queues

This is a unique place, and I highly recommend the Georgian elevenses. I particularly recommend taking someone who's never tasted the waters and watching their face the first time they take a sip! The drawback is that the queues are massive in season and even if you joined the queue at a reasonble time, you may not get to the front in time to have the elevenses and the staff are simply inflexible about that. If you're too late, you're too late. My tip: go in winter and avoid the tourists. The hot chocolate tastes even better when it's cold outside so sit back and enjoy the music and imagine you are in a Georgette Heyer novel!

A great setting

This simply a must if you ever visit Bath. Ideal if you've spent the whole day sight seeing and want to have a nice cuppa before heading back to the hotel. Typical old english, but you can't help but get caught up in the whole mood of it all. Of course the live trio/quartet fills the grand hall with classical music makes this what it is. Just note that just outside the Pump Room is a square and can get quite loud with the gathering of street performers and crowds.

The best clotted cream!

Next to the Roman bath, the Pump room is furnished with a huge chandelier accompanied with live piano, it has an excellent ambiance! The clotted cream served in the afternoon tea is the best! I've never had one that rich and thick! I have to go for another. The fish statue is cute, by the way.

Always wonderful

I've had the very good luck to visit the Pump Room several times and it never disappoints. The service is attentive without being intrusive and I love the food! But I didn't go to the Pump Room for any of those things. I love Georgian England and have gone to Bath for that reason alone. And the Pump Room is one of the best places to enjoy the atmosphere. The live music and the surroundings are just wonderful. I wish there were more places like this.

Good food, fine prices, wonderful history

After years of dreaming about the Pump Room, reading about it in Regency novels, and wondering if I'd have the courage to drink the famous water, I was there for lunch with my children. The atmosphere was one of quiet elegance, the food was perfectly presented, and the prices were fair for the quality of the delicious food. From our table, it was just a few steps to windows that overlooked the Roman baths; the view is spectacular, so bring your camera. The famous "healing" water served in the Pump Room looked scary but tasted fine, with no ill after-effects. Did it improve my health? I'm not sure about that. However, it was a memorable visit to a long-anticipated famous site, and well worth the trip. If you're a fan of Roman or Regency (Jane Austen's era) history, I highly recommend this restaurant.
