a bit of a treat

this place came on recommendation from a local and did not disappoint. it was not cheap, but was not intentionally a rip-off either - the wine list seemed good and the wine we had was excellent, despite not being at the top end of their pricing. the starter of scallops with chorizo, salsa and a bean puree was well-presented and tasty and the venison on buttered greens with a port/bacon gravy was one of the best mains I can recall. my wife had a ballatine with leaves and chutney followed by duck - she rated it very good but not the 'wow' I had with my main. dessert was the chocolate assiette for me and a fruity dish including a refreshing melon sorbet for the mrs, which she rated the highlight of her meal.
the service was excellent throughout.
definitely a place to go for a special meal, rather than casual dining. we were one of three neighbouring tables all celebrating wedding anniversaries!
