Moon and Sixpence (The)

Description

Smart and relaxed, with an outside covered patio and a few more tables out in the open in summer, this is tucked away under an arch off Broad Street just above the Postal Museum. Mostly used as a good class restaurant, though quite a few regulars use it as wine bar, this is a reliable, but not cheap, favourite with many. Cuisine is what might be termed contemporary European, and lunch is excellent value at £6.75 for two courses, desserts £3.50, with the evening set menu at around £20. Try not to be seated upstairs; it's on the way to the WC. Dress, although casual, is inevitably smart and mostly black, while the staff are usually svelte and sociable.

a bit of a treat
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/15/09
this place came on recommendation from a local and did not disappoint. it was not cheap, but was not intentionally a rip-off either - the wine list seemed good and the wine we had was excellent, despite not being at the top end of their pricing. the starter of scallops with chorizo, salsa and a bean puree was well-presented and tasty and the venison on buttered greens with a port/bacon gravy was one of the best mains I can recall. my wife had a ballatine with leaves and chutney followed by duck - she rated it very good but not the 'wow' I had with my main. dessert was the chocolate assiette for me and a fruity dish including a refreshing melon sorbet for the mrs, which she rated the highlight of her meal. the service was excellent throughout. definitely a place to go for a special meal, rather than casual dining. we were one of three neighbouring tables all celebrating wedding anniversaries!

Wow
By Felicity Maxwell, 1/5/07
On a rainy winter night, our dinner at Moon and Sixpence was the escape. Recommended by a local, we could not have been more pleased with the food, wine and service. While not inexpensive, our evening was delightful, and I certainly hope to find myself again in this welcoming spot some time soon. One note for visitors: Bookings are essential, particularly at prime times.

Will certainly re-visit
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/22/06
The food was of excellent quality and original with french flavours. The partridge was exceptional. The service was good and the manager most helpful. There was a good atmosphere but a bit to warm (temperature) for our liking. We will return

Excellent food - the set menu was very good value. All ingredients appeared to be fresh and high quality. The food was carefully cooked and presented. Service was excellent. A very pleasant find which I will recommend.

Mixed Blessings
By Ann, 5/2/06
A gem of a place with little cosy corners to drink, eat and talk in the sun. Excellent restaurant with indifferent service (lots of empty tables, areas waiting to be cleared, yet people turned away with "no space"). Food original and beautifully presented but lax service. Waited an hour for a table although many empty spaces and staff too busy to reset tables - even lied about availability! What a waste of a wonderful venue! Would, however, try again when in the area as the layout is informal and inviting, the food exceedingly good, and always the possibility of new staff!

Very good little restaurant
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/22/06
I found this restaurant to be one of Baths best kept secrets. The key to this restaurant is to go there and enjoy the great food, great service and fantastic atmosphere that this little gem has to offer. If you approach the restaurant with the intent to criticize you will only ruin a potentially great evening!!!! Its not the perfect restaurant or the “best” restaurant I have been to but I absolutely love this little restaurant; I would recommend it to anyone. The staff are friendly, cheerful and professional. Don’t go to Bath with out going to The Moon and Sixpence!!!!!!!

fantastic
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/05
The service was excelant, the staff all knew what they were doing and comunicated with eachother well, this eliminated the ever annoying factor of two waiters coming to ask about the same thing. Another nice touch was that the bread which was provided at the beginning of the meal (which as a matter of fact was exceptional) , if finished was replaced with more (provided you accept more ofcourse). This is not something you see at restaurants often. The food was also very good, The staff chose good moments to come up to see if everything was alright so as not to disrupt any conversation etc. I will agree that a lot of the staff were probably students however they all did their jobs very well.

One to avoid
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/29/05
Pleasant enough surroundings, but food is distinctly average. Staff are poorly trained and management appear to be too young and inexperienced. There are numerous restaurants offering superior cuisine, service and atmosphere in the same price range - try Pinch of Salt or Clarke's.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/20/05
Thought it was a nice little restaurant nd was so dissapointed with the servie, no one seemed to care, I ordered a drink whih was left on the bar for some 35 minutes in the end I had to go and collect it my self. The staff were inexperienced cheap labour. The food was average.
