Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia / St. Sophia)

Description

The magnificent Ayasofya was originally built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 537 AD, and it was used as a church for 916 years. It then became a mosque for 481 years, and Turkey's first President, Atatürk, declared it a museum in 1935. (It is no longer used as a place of worship, so you needn't be too concerned with your dress or the appropriateness of taking photos as you should be at some other religious landmarks in Istanbul, such as the Blue Mosque .) Considered the first and last unique application in terms of its architecture (it was built on a square base rather than the common rectangular one), magnificence and functionality, it has been the inspiration for Ottoman mosques for countless centuries. The incredible frescoes and mosaics in the upper gallery, despite being damaged, are among the most visited sites in the city. From 2007-2008, each and every gold tile piece of the ceiling wil l be restored to its former glory. Ayasofya is a number one must-see in Istanbul.

AWESOME & AMAZING
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/23/10
I loved this place. So full of history & culture. For me, it was amazing to see a building that was once a Christian church, then when the Ottoman's took over Istanbul an Islamic mosque & now a museum that shows the history of both religions. The Christian mosaics are not to be missed. Beautiful and elegant are words that come to mind. When I think back on my time in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia is the first image that comes to mind. To me, this building is just awe inspiring. As a quick side note, this building was built in the year 360. This museum is 1000 years older than the Sistine chapel in Rome and I was walking inside of it. Incredible!

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/30/10
I enjoyed watching Ayasofya from the outside , in the morning and late evening . It was a wonderful and fun experience . It was well preserved and maintained . Visitors from all over the world made the surrounding more lively. I do plan to come back again .

An architectural wonder!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/09
A beautiful monument, a wonder of architecture. The huge dome is suspended, no supporting columns seen. Isn't it a pity to obstruct the interior views with a "working floor to ceiling ladder"? When the tourist guide was asked how long this ladder is in the monument the reply was "I remember it since my grandfather's time! Quite a time for a restoration...Please remove it.

Strange feelings
By Natasha, 2/24/09
It was one of the most strange places I've ever been because of combine Christian and Islamic religion symbols in one place. It's really worth to visit.

great st. sophia
By haci, 10/19/08
we have visited st. sophia before a month and it was really enjoyable. we have read about it too much before our travel to istanbul but we have seen that it was nothing since we had it with a professional guide and he told us every corner and every detail mucher than we expected. Finally we highly recommend to visit St. Sophia especially with a professional guide. privateguidance@gmail.com just to have an option.
