Tarihi Selim Usta Sultanahmet Köftecisi
Sultanahmet is painfully short of good eateries, but this place has a constant stream of locals and tourists queuing out the door and down the street. It's strictly a fast food-style köfte restaurant. The tasty walnut sized meatballs are grilled to perfection over a great open-flame ocak (grill). Waiters literally run from table to table serving huge helpings of köfte accompanied by crusty bread, crispy green salad, fluffy rice and excellent white-bean salad. The restaurant has been around 80 years, hence its name which means, 'Historical Sultan Ahmet Köfte Restaurant'.
Tried this place on our 1st day of our 14-day Turkey backpacking trip and had to return on the last to savour the delicious meatballs before leaving. Pleasantly surprised by the food since the decor didn't standout from the rest of other restaurants. But a good place to watch the locals. Walls of restaurant full of pics of people who had ever visited, apparently famous but of course none we know. A very simple menu since meatballs is the restaurant's specialty, and indeed, what it excels in. Die die must try!
We were asking where to eat at the hotel and We have been told that this place is the most known for meatballs. Once we arrived we were surprised by the place which is very very simple, not very attractive but we decided to test. Service was just like the place, poor! But once we tasted our first dish of meatballs (there is nothing else anyway in the menu, actually no menu neither) we have been amazed how excellent it was. Actually we had to order again as we could not beleive it! I will definitely go back to this place during our next visit to Istanbul! Great food, really! Not much to say about the ambiance or the service unfortunately but it is what gives charme to this place. And it is soooo cheap!
