Claiming to be the oldest restaurant in Istanbul, its bright, freshly-painted walls give the three rooms a contemporary atmosphere. By far the most pleasant room is the one out the back; you'll find pink tones, a skylight and a glittering old world chandelier. The English menu lists a vast selection of Turkish and Ottoman delights. It's an excellent place for lunch. A colourful display of preserved pickles and fruits brightens up the entrance. Try the Kunefe for dessert; it's to die for.
Haci Abdullah prepares some dishes you don't commonly see on menus in Istanbul, and plenty you do see elsewhere. The restaurant is truly outstanding, however, for the quality of the ingredients and the care with which they're assembled. Every dish is an exquisite execution; even familiar ones have one or two extra dimensions that unfold in your mouth. He's a busy man, but if you get a chance to chat with the current proprietor he'll give you insight into the lengths they go to to make sure they get, for instance, the kaymak (waterbuffalo cream) they want, etc. This care and quality is, naturally enough, reflected in the prices. If you're looking for decent, classic Turkish cooking in nice enough surroundings, you might want to go elsewhere and pay less (and it being Istanbul chances are you will have at least a decently good meal); if you're looking for the most outstanding representative of classical Turkish cuisine in Beyoglu and one of the best in the city, this is the place. For the level of cuisine you're eating, the prices are in fact quite reasonable. Service is impeccable, and the redecorated interior is appropriate to the menu. No alcohol served.
I agree with one of the reviewer ... Haci Abdullah is to expensive even with foreign norms... I will definitely recommend Haci Salih which is next door closer to Istiklal caddesi and Restorant Lades which is on the same street but accros Istiklal ... where I am having my lunch daily ... I suggest you go for lunch around 1230 ... at night you have less choice since this is all day open restaurant and people comes and goes anytime ... food is consumed rapidly . You will eat with locals( Shoemakers Lawyers Actors ... and architects as myself ... Enjoy it . This restaurant must be among the 10 ...
If you know istanbul restaurants as i do, you'll find that this is a very expensive one compared to others serving the same dishes with lower prices.I'm used to visit istanbul every year. Last year I visited it with my family, we ordered only 3 dishes(vegetarian dishes), they charged us 80 ytl,and the food wasn't that good. In other nearby restaurants, with that money we were able to feed a family of 4 with a main meat dish, dessert and a drink. I was really tricked by the internet information about that restaurant.
you should try the hiounkar begendi !!!
chopped meat & mashed eggplants !!!
the elbasan tava was also nice ...
the desserts are tasty as well
the prices are very low ...
one of the best restaurants i've ever been
The food was excellent. They have some traditional recipes that you cannot easily find somewhere else. Mmmmm, yummy, and the prices are fair compared to luxury restaurants. I would strongly recommend if you want to eat real Turkish food.
