In 1628, the highly-decorated warship, Vasa sailed from Stockholm on her anticipated maiden voyage and sank. However, three centuries later, in 1961, Vasa was discovered and salvaged, and is now the world's only preserved 17th-century ship. It has now been converted into a museum. The cleverly constructed museum allows you to view it from six levels. The history of the ship is documented with slide shows, movies and exhibitions. Information is available in 10 different languages. Admission is SEK70 for adults, SEK40 for students, SEK10 for children between seven to 15, and free for children under seven.

A truly fascinating museum that houses what was once the worlds most biggest and powerful war ship. The Vasa has been breathtakingly restored and the museum has an exhibition of original artifacts including officers personal belongings, medical equipment, thousands of coins and you get a wonderful feeling of what life must have been like for the hundreds of soldiers about to embark on this ship that was the pride of the Swedish navy. If you go to Stockholm and you only have time to visit one museum, then visit this one. Vasamuseet is a magnificent achievement in salvage work which has taken over 50 years of hard work and patience to reunite Stockholm with it's nautical history.

Entering this museum you are hardly prepared for what you will find inside. The only hint is the buildings exterior architecture that follows the form of the amazing ship found within. But, more amazing is the story behind the Vasa and how it came to be found, restored and displayed. The museums multi-lingual staff, movies and displays explains in great detail the history of the doomed 17th century ship that only made it a few hundred yards out of its dry dock before in sank in the cool Baltic water. Seems the Baltic did more than swallow up this piece of history. The cold waters helped to pressure this ship until it was found in 1961. Take a few hours to explore all that the museum has to offer - the multiple floors permit visitors to see all angles and levels of the ship. But, don’t miss the movie – it gives an excellent historical overview of the ship as well as footage of the recovery and restoration efforts. And if you are there around lunch – don’t miss the restaurant. Unlike American museum fare (ie: burgers, hot dogs and the like) the Vasa’s restaurant is outstanding – warm meals prepared by a chef and great views water. If you only have time to see one thing in Stockholm – I would pick the Vasa!
