Den Gyldene Freden
Golden Peace is said to be Stockholm's oldest tavern. The restaurant opened in 1722 and many famous people have wined and dined here over the centuries. Incidentally, the interior has changed very little over time. The decor is rustic, depicting medieval and renaissance cultures.
Didn't dislike anything. Chose it as the oldest restaurant in Stockholm and that is just what it seemed. It had old fashioned courtesy and charm coupled with first class food. Expensive as one would expect, so no complaint.
It's been said before about Den Gyldene Freden but it's worth mentioning again as to ensure nobody makes the same mistake that I made. I ignored the poor reviews and read only the reviews I liked, this was clearly a mistake on my part. In short, the food was warm, not hot, just warm, the service was rude and the fact that I had to clean my own knife made sure that I would write this review. If you are looking for a romantic meal, or just somewhere to compliment a nice weekend away in Stockholm then I would recommend you go else where.
"WOW!!! Great food, what a place! must go there, highly recommended!!" - the reviews said.
I spend a lot of time choosing where to eat and stumbled across many reviews and these are the ones I found, most offering praise to the establishment. Sadly however I expect that:
a) these reviews were written by themselves, the management [does that even happen I wonder]
b) people who wrote the reviews rarely dine out. [quite unlikely also]
c) The customer didn't write the review with the basics in mind and perhaps focussed on the building's charm and heritage [which is easily done].
Before you read on please allow me to highlight that I am sure the restaurant in question does perform very well on occasions but by assessment is based on my evening there. I am not going to write any words which simply follow others and since it was rather recent that I ate there I can be nothing other than accurate with my account of the evening.
So, first off, the food. The food was, well, it's a rubbish word to use but it fits, 'ok', the food was just 'ok', the truth is the food was quite simple and that's what makes it even more difficult to forgive them for allowing the food to be cold by the time it got to the customer. The service was colder than the food, 'ice cold', despite attempts to involve the staff with the usual and frankly pathetic, "what would you recommend?" etc their faces remained as though a smile would simply be too 'relaxed' given the prestigious reputation the restaurant has established over the years. So, poor food, pompous service but a nice feel to the place, an exceptional building which could be utilised so much better if the manager paid some attention to the basics. Gordan Ramsey would have a field day in this place, of that I am quite sure.
To surmise I would say this is one to avoid. Stockholm must have better restaurants than this one, sorry but it simply must.
Haven't been there in many years, but it is still vivid in my mind. Great food, attentive service, and an ambience that is seldom matched. Ask to be seated in one of the rathskellers, down narrow stairs and into what I was told were once dungeons. A truly great experience.

Old world charm in every way. Food was Classic and modern at the same time. Many interior rooms including several vaulted ones to pick from. Service was good enough to endorse strongly. Would we go back?--Yup. Would we send our friends?--We have. PS A classy bar if you'd like to meet some friends in Old Town
