A delightful bit of France, incongruously located in the ground floor of a soulless office tower. Popular with the pre-theater crowd, since it's right across Market St. from the Keller Auditorium. Typical bistro fare: appetizers include escargot, moules, and fois gras. Main courses include the always-reliable steak frites and duck confit, in addition to a variety of other traditional entrees. The wine list is exceptionally well-chosen and very reasonably priced. Service is unfailingly pleasant, and owners Julie and Pascal are delightful, gracious hosts.
Dining at Carafe is always a comfortable, enjoyable experience. The owners have made a conscientious effort to run their business in a sustainable and ethical manner - and have in the process created a wonderfully welcoming restaurant. It's one of my favorite places in Portland.
