Montserrat Mountain

Description

This spectacularly beautiful mountain, located to the north of Barcelona, is one of Catalonia's most important religious sites. The peaks are shaped like fingers pointing to the sky and you'll find an impressive church, monastery and museum on the summit. According to legend, a shepherd found a statue of the Virgin in a cave here and that's why they built the church and monastery on the mountain. The Virgin was black (like many other Romanesque images) and that's why she's known as La Moreneta (the dark one). To get here, take the direct bus to the monastery or an FGC suburban train to Monistrol and then the cable car to the top. It's an easy day trip from Barcelona.

Amazing View
By ,
I visited this place back in 2002 and it was beautiful. One thing my classmates and I can't forget is the drive up the mountain. It's such a curvy road or maybe it was just that we were in a bus and he was driving so fast. We seriously thought we were gonna fall off the mountain. Once you're up there, the church is amazing and the museum is great to. I would definately recommend this place. Spain is beautiful!!!

Would visit again in an instant!
By ,
The whole place is breathtaking. The monastry and the mountains are beautiful and if you can make the effort to do the walks to the highest points you have 360 views over plains. However the hikes can take a while so make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen! The food on the mountain was quite expensive so try to bring some with you. Overall a very spirtual and aweinspiring place to visit!

Unreal Mountains - go if you can
By ,
It's entirely understandable why this has been a spiritual center. The mountains that jut out of the landscape are striking. Upon approach, you can't take your eyes off of them. The monastery is built in an improbable but beautiful setting. I've seen women cry when the boys choir sang inside the church. There are some hiking trails for those who want to reach the top. Various monuments (including a lovely statue of Pablo Casals) dot the path.
