Commonly known as La Pedrera (The Quarry), the real name for this spectacular work of Antoni Gaud's is the Casa Mil. The nickname stems from its stony, fortress-like appearance, much ridiculed at the time, but today it stands as the superlative example of modernista architecture. The entire building was restored in 1996, the Espai Gaud -- a didactic museum -- installed in the attic and one of the apartments refurbished to how it would have looked at the time of its early-20th-century residents.
