Barcelona Zoo

Description

Part of the Parc de la Ciutadella complex, the zoo houses over 7000 animals from over 500 different species. You can see dolphin shows and other aquatic mammals performing in the marine enclosure. There are tropical birds, reptiles, spiders, lions, tigers and more. The Barcelona Zoo was renowned for nearly forty years as the home of Snowflake, a rare albino gorilla. Unfortunately, this much beloved creature died and the Barcelona Zoo maintains his memory directing visitors to the website "Snowflake's group," that includes a video and other mixed media presentations.

My zoo is better
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/21/05
I wish they would have more animals more specific to the country of Spain. Most the animals I saw can be seen at any zoo including the one 10 minutes down the road from my home.

horrible!
By amanda, 5/15/06
horrible service and it was like the animals were tortured! I hated the experience and I plan never to go back to the Barcelona zoo. I do not understand why it was so horrible, the ratings are so good!

Loved It!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/26/07
It was clean and beautiful. I really do not know why people gave it a bad rating. I loved it. And I can not wait to go back.

Taunted Animals
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/28/11
I usually enjoy having a wander around zoos. There are a number of interesting animals, new things to learn, information about conservation etc, but the Barcelona Zoo seemed to disappoint. If you just glazed over everything, it seems like a decent zoo, but when you look a bit deeper into things it seems as though there is a slightly darker side to this establishment. Many of the larger animals' "habitats" were far to small for them, and there seemed to be too much access for the public to these animals. For instance, when you view the bears you are looking down on them in a fancy pit, where people can hang over the side, and one man started throwing food at the bears and trying to get it to stand up for the treat. Also, people were throwing food scraps into the orangutans inclosure which they then began to fight over. The ones throwing the food thought that it was hilarious, so they just continued. At another habitat, a zoo attendant walked by while people were feeding the zebras grass through the bars, and did not say a word. These are just some of the things that really frustrated me, but you could tell by the look of nearly half of the animals that there was hardly any stimulation going on, and they were just pacing back and forth, or aggressively "playing" with one another. I was really disappointed when I left this place. Considering the entrence fare charged, they should have more resources available to do some updates and provide better space for all of the animals, not just some.

don't understand the good reviews
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/9/07
I thought the conditions were wretched and the animals looked bored and sick. Many of them were pacing in small cages, especially the big cats, and had no grass or toys. The elephants and rhinos were on concrete. It looked like an antiquated zoo from the 60's. Why people think this zoo was better than any in the U.S. I don't understand. I spoke to a lady from Melbourne who was saying the same thing. Very sad. The San Diego Zoo in Ca. is so much better. Plus, all the vending machines were broken, and only one small restaurant area was open.
