Font Magica Rewards Your Effort
We saw the fountains at the end of a long day on our feet, and we were almost tired enough to say, "Ah, just forget it". We're glad we didn't. We pushed ourselves for one last outing that night, caught the metro to a stop very near the fountains, and saw a fabulous display of water, lights, and music. If you've seen the Bellagio in Las Vegas...well, this is different. The Font Magica doesn't shoot water as high, nor is it nearly as large, but the overall setting is so spectacular that it compares favorably with the Bellagio.
The large fountain, about 50 yards wide, sits at the base of a magnificent wide stairway that ascends to the National Art Museum. The stairway is lined with small fountains shooting water up 15 feet, and has two additional levels where there are larger fountains also spouting water. The visual this entire setting creates is breathtaking, including the backlighting of the museum that spears into the night-sky like a crown. The fountains are lit and the colors change from brilliant reds and oranges to soft blues, greens and yellows, all choreographed to the music. We're glad we made the effort...it was one of our best experiences in Barcelona. A new show takes place every 30 minutes, and we stayed for four of them...strong praise when you're as weary as we were.
