Built at the beginning of the 1900s, this tavern is still the star of the Poble Sec district. It's run by the fifth generation of Quimets who have preserved the traditional atmosphere so well that the place is always packed. There's a fantastic wine cellar with all sorts of quality wines and spirits. They also serve delicious freshly made tapas like navajas de la ría (razor clams), esturión morillo (sturgeon) and beans with cod. Some of the most popular montados (like canapes) include mussels with tomato comfit and caviar, anchovies with spicy piquillo peppers a la vinagrette, and anchovies with sea urchin and tomato. There are more than a hundred to choose from, with different options every day.
We were staying within a few streets of this wonderful tapas bar and only found it on our last night (typical!). My son is studying Spanish so he was desperate to try a typically Spanish Tapas bar. We were not disappointed. The bar has been in the same familY (Qumimet) for five generations. Husband, wife and daughter there on our night. It is tiny but don't let that put you off. The food is divine, the choice of wines, etc amazing and so very friendly and reasonably priced. A perfect place to sample genuine Spain.
It was an excellent and cozy place to have some marvellous tapas, a glass of high quality wine or beer. Everything is prepared with taste and despite being too small in terms of space, the Quimet wine collection was amazing and impressive. Absolutely great atmosphere!
