Quatre Gats (Els), Barcelona

This was food prepared with care. Each dish we had was exquisite (and often exquisitely simple)--exhilirating to the palatte. The atmosphere (steeped in appreciable history) was delightful. Service was peerless and pleasant. I have read mixed reviews of this establishment on various web sites and now wonder where the heck those people went--not to this delightful place, certainly. The finest meals we had in Barcelona.

Although it has a reputation for being touristy and expensive I absolutely love it for its atmosphere. Each time I visit Barcelona with new friends I have to take them, although I wouldn't book a table if I couldn't sit in the main body of the restaurant. It takes me back in time to civilised dining.

I had a GREAT meal and beer here but the most impressive element was the atmosphere. It's filled with warm colors and the catwalk overlooks the main floor which is great for couples looking for a quiet, romantic meal while still being able to enjoy the feel of bustling restaurant big piano music. Be prepared to wait for a table (45 min? Relax and drink a beer) and go late as you're on Spanish time

In the fall of 2000, we traveled around Spain: Madrid, Costa del Sol, Seville, Tarragona and Barcelona of course. Four Cats was our best restaurant experience by far -- no contest. The food was great which was a rarity for me. The ambiance was in a class all to itself --the pianist set the tone. We were upstairs but the cordial interaction between the pianist and the clientele downstairs was such a warm exchange. On second thought, The Four Cats is without question one of the best dining experiences I have had in the U.S. or Europe. Our Picasso "Four Cats" print is a constant reminder of that evening.
