If you're tired of the typical Tex-Mex fare and feel like more genuine Mexican cuisine, head on over to Cantina Machito, near Plaza Virreina and next to Verdi Park cinema, which shows films in their original language with Spanish subtitles. The gold-coloured walls, a carved wood pillar and a fountain covered in tiles in one corner make for a charming atmosphere. The menu isn't long, but it also goes over the history and traditions associated with each dish. For starters or Antojitos, good options include the guacamole, Caldo (broth) or Ceviche (marinated seafood). The portions aren't all that big, though they are served with flour tortillas. People normally order a few main courses to share. Some of the best include delicious Mole Poblano (turkey in chocolate sauce), Cochinita Pibil (pork) or Tinga (veal). The drinks menu features margaritas and tequila, plus Mexican beer and Spanish wine. They also serve Aguas Frescas, simlar to fruit juices. For dessert, the Tarta Juanita is like a brownie, though another interesting option is tequila mousse. When you can't take any more, order yourself the Cafe de Olla (coffee with lemon and cinnamon). They don't take reservations on the weekend when it gets packed, so show up with plenty of time to spare.
1. waited ages for our table then were rushed through our meal in less than an hour
2. no english menu - even though my spanish is okay I could only understand half of the menu as I haven't learned words for mexican foods! and the staff don't speak any english to explain things you don't understand. of course, that's a problem with my language skills, not theirs (as we were in Spain, after all!) but be warned if your don't speak the lingo.
3. VERY authentic food. thought I'd had authentic mexican before, but no! be prepared to have mole with everything.... by the way, mole is a chocolate-flavoured sauce. I love chocolate but the sauce was bland and kind of dry in the mouth, and certainly didn't go with chicken, or the beef my boyfriend had.
On the plus side, the margheritas are great!if you are going to go for food, I'd recommend stick to nachos for an early evening snack, and eat properly somewhere else instead.
I definitely recommend Catina Machito! I have eaten there three times and every time it was delicious and we had great service. They have very good margaritas, and the green enchiladas and the chicken tostadas are very tasty. Probably the most authentic Mexican food you are going to find in Barcelona.
