Pep Manubens, the owner, greets customers from behind the bar, where delights them with amazing fish and seafood dishes that are very well presented. Simple dishes, cooked there and then in front of the customer. There are also more elaborate dishes, such as the beef stew. When ordering a drink, it is best to ask for Pep's recommendation. The wine list is vast and the choice goes from famous labels to original vintage wines. There are not many tables to eat at but the real pleasure is trying the food at the bar. Well-managed restaurant, with friendly service.
For those of you who've never experienced "cal Pep" disregard any critics who say it is "overrated", for they truly do not understand good food. "Cal Pep" is world famous and is perfect for those who love simplicity and quality ingredients. The place is usually packed with an average waiting time of 20 minutes...no problem; you can have a beer or glass of cava while waiting. The service is friendly and almost too fast. The only disappointing part of this experience will be that it ended too quickly.
Agree with you that it's over rated. No menu. you have no idea what to order and how much it would cost you. Waited an hour to get a table. Workers are not friendly. I liked Taller the Tapas and Origins which have menus. Origin's menu has pictures as well.
Just great - if you like good food, tapas and some "couleur locale", this is the place to be ! We had to wait for about 30 min to get a seat at the bar but it was worth every minute of it. We already ordered a bottle of wine queuing up and told the waiter we wanted to taste as much different things as possible. Every plate they served us was delicious: clamps, baby squid, tortilla, ... and the wine they serve matches the quality of the food. Superb !
My husband and I spent weeks in Spain. While shopping in a local store, it was suggested to us to try Cal Pep. We had no idea what to expect, but upon arriving, there was a line out the door! With so many great places to eat in Barcelona, you never see this. We knew it had to be good and worth the wait. We were not disappointed, and went back for lunch prior to our departing flight from Spain. Simply wonderful but not cheap!
The food at Cal Pep is simply delicious. The ingredients are local and very simply prepared in front of you. The place to sit is at the counter (not the dining room). It is always crowded and you can expect to wait, but worth every minute. The best experiences that I had there, I let Pep order for me. You will know exactly who he is when you sit down. His look and voice are very distinctive. I especially love the baby razor clams, the padron peppers, and for dessert, his four mousses. I think about going to Barcelona just to eat here.
I also recommend a bottle of the house red. It is really good and a bottle costs about $7 euro. A true bargain.
We sat at the bar and were entertained by the server, dazzled by the cooks and amazed with the flavours presented to us.We let the sever pick our food and wine and all was good , resonable prices as well.
After spending several months in Barcelona and eating out most lunchtimes and evenings Cal Pep stood firmly above the rest in terms of traditional tapas .Selection of wines is spot on,seafood as fresh it possibly can be and the atmosphere buzzing.10 out of 10!
We ate in the back rooom, which only has about 7 tables. The decor and atmostphere was lovely. As for the no-menu order, it was OK. We had a lot of little tapas. But for the entrees, all of the dishes that was served were basically clams. Big, medium, small, tiny...you name it...Maybe it was just that day but a variety of meat or poultry would have nicely complemented the clams. Service was good though, and the owner/manager gave us free liquor!!!
