Novodevich'e Kladbishche (Novodeviche Cemetery), St. Petersburg

This cemetery competed with that of the Alexander Nevskii Monastery for design and prestige. Many of St. Petersburg's aristocrats, academics, famous painters and actors used to be buried there. After the revolution the cemetery was partly destroyed, but burial internments continued until 1934, after the closure of the convent. There are a variety of interesting chapels and burial halls in the cemetery, but on the whole the place is rather dilapidated.
