Khram "Spasa na Krovi" (Saviour on Spilled Blood Cathedral and Museum)

Description

This church is an impressive sight when seen from Nevskii Prospekt jutting out onto Kanal Griboedova. It has numerous stunning cupolas in the "Russian" manner, some of which are multi-colored or constructed like from geometric patterns. It is one of those places you really have to see to believe. The mosaic interior was created by over 30 artists and covers an area of 7000 square meters. The church was originally built in memory of the assassination of Alexander II, killed by a bomb in 1881 on the exact spot the cathedral stands today.

Stunning Mosaics
By ,
This tiny museum/church is fabulous. The mosaics are enormous and intricate, using rich colors to depict religious scenes on all walls. The floors are gorgeous too, with thinly laid geometric patterns of Italian marble. Not far from Nevskii Prospekt, the church won't take you away from nearly any tourist itinerary. It is definitely possible to join surreptitiously onto a tour group here, particularly if you speak foreign languages. But at any rate, a tour guide is recommended, because they will help you truly appreciate the scenes that you see.

Best SP attraction!
By ,
Our group loved the 'Church of Spilled Blood' the most of everything that we saw in Russia. The outside is amazing and you will probably want to add some extra time so you can all go around the building and get photos from every angle. Plus, it will build the suspense for what you are about to see on the inside. Our group leader had to drag us out of there! Of course, we then had to go over to the souvenier market across the street. Some of us went back a second time during our free time so we could see it again it was so amazing. I will be going for my third and possibly fourth times very soon!

Church on Spilled Blood
By ,
Go late in the day (within one hour of closing) otherwise you will wait in long lines. The Church is absolutely marvelous inside and out. It's the type of archetechture you dream of before you come to Russia. The interior just went through a major rennovation. The 7000 meters of mosaic is a must see . . . it is an incredible site. Don't miss the alter that stands over the exact spot where Alexander II died. It is still maintained as the bare ground where he fell. A trip inside is worth the entry fee. There is a porta-potty at the entrance at a cost, like most rest rooms in Russia. Across the steet from the church is the largest market for tourist souvenirs that we found in St. Petersburg. Make sure you barter.
