Chesmenskaia Tserkov' (Chesma Church)
Description
The red and white striped Chesma church was built between 1777 and 1780 and named in honor of the Russian victory over the Turks at the Battle of the Bay of Chesma in 1770 in Asia Minor. The building is pseudo-Gothic in style and looks like a four-leafed flower, each of the petals a semi-circle crowned with a cupola surrounded by spires topped with a cross. The walls, elaborated with narrow vertical stripes and stucco lancet arches are dissected by tall arched windows.
