Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery
Description
Divided by the railway into a western and an eastern sections, this cemetery developed over time into two entirely separate burial sites. On one side 'The Cemetery of the Victims of the 9th of January' and on the other a Jewish cemetery. The former refers to the massacre of 'Bloody Sunday' in 1905, when a peaceful and priest-led demonstration on Palace Square was shot down by Tsarist troops. On the other side there is a Jewish cemetery, still a functioning burial place and an important center of spiritual life for St. Petersburg's Jewish community.
