The State Tretyakov Gallery
Pavel Tretiakov, collector of some the best work of contemporary artists in Moscow and St. Petersburg, founded this gallery in 1856. His brother Sergei collected French and Dutch masters, and in 1872 they combined their collections and opened this extremely popular museum named as The State Tretyakov Gallery (Tret'iakovskaia Galereia). In 1892 it was donated to the city of Moscow, and lives on with works by famous Russian painters such as Vasilii Perov, Ivan Kramskoi and Ilia Repin.
Want to spend a good half day in a world class museum? Go to the Tretykov, and wander through the galleries.
You can trace Russian History as you progress through the museum. Something for everyone, from busts, to landscapes, to portraits, to statues to icons. Rennaisance to modern.
Very little in English, so either buy a guide book, or the audioguide, although it takes a lot longer to do the museum as you stop and listen to each recitation.
A couple of blocks from the museum on 16 Pyatnitskaya (right across from the Novokuznetskaya Metro) is Uncle Vanya's Restaurant. Great Russian food, very reasonably priced. Menus in English, and great service. A local's favorite, save room for the Bliny's.
Lunch at Uncle Vanya's and an afternoon at the Tretykov is a wonderful way to spend a day in Moscow.
I loved the art, it's interesting to trace the Russian art history from it's begginings to the recent history. The collection is excellent, take a guided tour if you get a chance, the audio tours are no match for the human interaction. Liked the atmosphere, very refreshing change from the stuffy, commercial establishments that most western museums have turned into.
