Description

Since the end of the 14th century, Izmailovo has been the aristocratic family estate of the Izmailovs and later the Romanovs. Peter the Great stayed here during his youth and rumour has it that he learnt to sail on the lake near the estate. In 1980, the Izmailovo complex became a branch of the State Historical Museum. The Izmailovo Museum Complex includes the Bridge Tower, the God's Shelter for Military Men and the Cathedral of the Intercession. The museum collection consists of portraits, engravings, household items, military uniforms and weapons of the 14th-17th centuries.

Look in Moscow then BUY souvenirs here!

Izmailovo is very close to a metro stop. If you have local help, or are very brave and talented to find the way here on the subway, it is an easy trip and a great experience. I have been here twice. The first time it rained (October) and the second time it snowed (March). Hopefully, the third time will be a charm and it will be sunny! But regardless of the weather, it is THE place to find inexpensive lacquer boxes of high quality, the wooden, exquisitely painted Matroishka nesting dolls of all sizes, just about any Russian-theme trinket you can think of as well as amber and other minerals. There are many, many booths and kiosks to wander through and find exactly what you want. And do not forget to haggle. They want your business and you can get good prices with a little patience. I have also found some really great Russian fairy tale books that I have bought for my grandchildren.

Shopping Heaven

What do you want to take home from your trip to Moscow? Amber, dolls, Father Frost, a linen table cloth? You name it Ismailova, has it! If you live in Moscow then also one of the best sources of DVD's on the cheap. Atmosphere, singing ladies, plastic spires and shashlik. Along with the best souvenirs in town makes this shopping heaven.
