Krakow is fortunate to still have large segments of its historic city walls. The Old Town is surrounded by sections of it. In former times the walls faced a wide moat which has since been converted into a ring park (called Planty). Construction of the walls was an ongoing project which began in the 1200's. At their most extensive, the walls were three kilometers long and dotted with towers and fortifications. There were eight official entrances into the city but only one of these - the Florianska Gate - remains. Likewise, only three of the original 47 observation and defensive towers are still standing.
