Kay An' Is Am Island: KNSM-island, very funny! The poor pun in the name notwithstanding, this is a delightful, slightly shabby cafe with a pleasant terrace on the Levant Quay on Java island, the former home of the KNSM shipping company. Visited by people with boats and yuppies with their small families. Roomy, with quiet music and friendly female service. The pub has been given precedence over the restaurant recently. The terrace to the east is large has a view of a peculiar mixture of boats and ships: windjammers, barges, tugs, yachts and so on. There is an old pool table and an exhibition of bird skulls. They serve Apple Pie with your coffee, and for lunch there are rolls with a large range of cheeses and meats and also a soup-of-the-day. The draught beer is Heineken and white beer, alongside a limited range of bottled beer. The red and white house wines are pleasant. The previously extensive menu has been changed into a broad range of delicious tapas.
living in the area, I keep coming to this place coz of its location and terrace, but they have THE worst service in the town. The staff has no concept of service, they are rude and lazy and if you happen to ask them for a bit of cold milk in your double espresso or cheese on the pancake, they will tell you (with the full mouth) that it is not on the menu, therefore cannot be done. They will also have you wait forever if bother to come and serve you at all....
I frequented the place in Nov. 2003, and really enjoyed it. The overview I read on this site said they changed their menu, but when I was there they had really enjoyable food. Breakfasts (after waking up on a boat nearby at about 11am) were fantastic well-balanced, satisfying frames for the day. Every now and then they'd have a special dinner for their regulars. There's a bus stop very close, which can take you into town. The staff at K&M was supercool and a pleasure to hang out with after hours. It was just a great public house.
The river Amstel was dammed here in the 13th Century. Amstelerdam, a small fishing community, was founded on the banks
of the river. Boats could unload their freight here and alongside the Damrak. When the Nieuwe Kerk was rebuilt ...
