Dorrius, Amsterdam

We dined at Dorrius on a rainy, November night after walking our legs off without an umbrella. We knew nothing about Dutch food, but were eager to have a new experience. The restaurant is very inviting. The atmosphere is sort of pub-like with dark wood, tin ceiling, and soft lighting. You will not feel cramped at their rather large tables -- even tables for too. We walked in without a reservation and were given the last table for two. It was in an intimate room with four other tables. The dining experience is elegant. There are crisp white linens on the tables, and the staff is professional, helpful, and friendly. After giving your drink order, you are presented with a basket of bread with a selection of three spreads and pork rinds. On the table was a wine that was recommended for 34 euro. We accepted this recommendation, and the wine was excellent. The portions were large, and the food was piping hot and delicious. No one tried to push anything on us or steer us toward higher-priced offerings. My main dish was one of the "recommended" Dutch dishes, and it cost a little over 17 euros. I would definitely go to Dorrius again (in fact, I look forward to doing so). My four (as opposed to five) stars for food is only because, though really good, the food is not really gourmet level. However, that is not what we were looking for, and it may not be what you are looking for either. We got an excellent, authentically Dutch meal with great service at a very reasonable price. How can you beat that?
