Cafe Bern

Description

The Nieuwmarkt and the Gelderse Kade are located on the border of the Red Light District, to be sure, but they offer a wide scope of decent and respectable activities. Among the many eating and drinking places, this brown cafe-restaurant 'Bern' distinguishes itself by its excellent kitchen and a free and easy atmosphere, where the right white whine is poured to accompany the superb speciality: Melted Cheese Dip the original Swiss way. The public is not really dominated by the just under average age group.

Cafe Bern is a star
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/18/08
As an Amsterdam resident you do have your spots where hardly any visitors from outside NL come. Cafe Bern is such a spot. Recently we've been bumping into more and more lovely foreign speaking folks at our table ( sometimes it's so crowded you have to share a table... It's Amsterdam!!!). When ususally trying to avoid this, here it's nice. It is a marvellous place, the food is lovely and the staff really pleasant- they come when you need them, but will leave you to your dinner for the rest. Its a lovely place where you will bump into a huge range of Amsterdammers. For Amsterdam standards this place is a star!!!

great place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/7/08
I visited here some years back and enjoyed a great dinner and drinks with friends and cousin through marriage, Thomas and Manon. It's easy to understand the fondue compliments when you consider the owner grew up in Zollikon at a little place called the Gugger near the Zurich lake. Tom, if you're reading this...hope to see you one day soon at the lake or the cafe. I'll bring Vreni along this time!

Eat where the locals eat....
By Quinn, 10/17/07
Whenever I travel abroad, I like to find places where locals eat. I had heard about Cafe Bern threw some local folks. It is a typical Amsterdam Brown cafe, but don't let that fool you.It is full of life and and tons of local character, this feels like Amsterdam. The staff is friendly and are willing to help you if you never been there before, because this is a dining experience. Now that is out of the way. The food... Simple delicious...The steak fondue is there specialty. The steak is charred and is put on a steal plate over a burner with a green sauce in the middle that comes to a bubble, and you cook the steak to your liking. That with the cheese fondue and the french stick bread is amazing. They have not changed there menue in 30 years I was told. I can see why not. In the 5 days i was in the dam I went 2 times. Check it out and decide for yourself. This is the best rerstaurant in the best city. Spliff up......

Fantastic Fondue!
By Miri, 7/16/07
I remember reading about this place in my rough trade guide book before going to amsterdam and myself and my friends accidently stumbled upon it while there. It was by far the best meal we had on the whole trip, and was very reasonably priced for Amsterdam prices. We went in on a saturday evening and had only a short wait for a table. The staff were very veery friendly and helpful and the fondue itself was fantastic, apparantly it is composed of over 30 herbs and with alcohol, the taste was wonderful. We ordered both the cheese & beef fondue and I highly recomend trying both. It was a real find compared to most overpriced resturants.

The best meal I had
By Scott Green, 10/18/05
For 15 years, my wife has been trying to get me to a Fondue restaurant and I have been running away. Well, she finally caught me while we were in Amsterdam. We ended up at Cafe Bern and all I can say is WOW!!! Make your reservations as soon as you get into Amsterdam since they are booked several days into advance, or you can be there around 6:00p.m. and sit at the bar (that's where we ended up). They have been serving their specialty for almost two hundred years. You won't want to miss this.

Fondue and beer- what's better than that?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/23/05
The food was great, we had the cheese fondue. You might want to get a reservation if your going for dinner especially if it's on the weekend (they do have a waiting table complete with about 150 magazines!)The service was also good, nice friendly people and down to earth!

Award winning dinner!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/8/05
As we walked through the door my wife was thinking, "Where are you taking me now?" This looks like just another bar - not the sort of place you would go for a good dinner. The atmosphere is very casual. We ordered the house special - beef fondue. It came on a metal tray with what appeared to be a pesto sauce of some type. The burner heated the sauce to a boil and we cooked our beef. It was wonderful! The salad that the meal came with and a side order of guyere cheese made for a different and very enjoyable dining experience. This cafe rated the highly sought after and seldom recieved, "I would eat here again" from my wife.
