Opened in 1992 by Bert and Sara van Buschbach (Bert having worked in some of the city's best restaurants; Sara a wine expert), De Compagnon is considered by locals as one of the best French restaurants in town. It boasts an excellent Burgundian menu (veal sweetbreads, dates stuffed with goose liver) and a fabulous wine selection, all fairly affordable. The decor is pleasant, with attention to privacy; the tables are spread over three floors creating a feeling of intimacy. Lovely drawings of Amsterdam throughout the last few centuries adorn the walls.
This is a very rustic restaurant, down a short lane, overlooking the canal. Small cosy corners on different levels. The tables are very close together, but we've never found that a problem. The staff are friendly and the food is great. The ladies toilet is spotless (I'm sure the gents is too) with a few 'thoughtful' extras. I reckon it's our favourite restaurant in Amsterdam.
If there are 39 better restaurants in Europe, let alone Amsterdam, I'd be surprised. I work in Amsterdam for a week every other year and eating at De Compagnon is the highlight of my stay every time. Fantastic food, great service, lovely setting with a soon-to-be ruined view and in Le Grand Dessert they have the best dessert I've ever eaten anywhere. I travel a lot and therefore eat out a lot and this place can't be faulted. I often bring clients here and they love it - several have come back with their partners and made special trips to do so from Germany, France, the UK and even Slovenia. I'm not scheduled to go back to Amsterdam until April 2008, more's the pity.
