This respected restaurant (ranked in the Dutch top 50) is to be found on the 23rd floor of the Okura Hotel, located in the immediate vicinity of Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Concertgebouw. From this floor, you will have an unbelievable view over the city of Amsterdam and its surrounding area. The cuisine is cosmopolitan French, but once in a while you can discover some Oriental or seasonal influences. The service is good and formal. Prices are, rather predictably, very high but you do get dishes of a superb quality.
I had dined with a coworker and 2 friends of mine at Ciel Bleu and we all ordered their sampler menu (8 courses). Unfortunately, 3 out of the 4 of us developed stomach problems (including vomitting) after the dinner.
My friend had called them the day after and the restaurant said they would conduct tests. Apparently nothing was wrong with their food, so I suppose what they were trying to say was that it was us not them and we possibly had food allergies. I had noted all the different foods we ate and I'm 100% sure that I wasn't allergic to any of the ingredients mentioned by the waiters.
Overall, I was very disappointed with this restaurant and if I ever go back to Amsterdam, you can be sure I'm NEVER going back to eat here again.
No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to Ciel Bleu. The food is wonderful, the wine list very good, the view fantastic and the service attentive. As you would expect, this is not an inexpensive place to dine. Resulting in a value that is very good but not outstanding.
We have dined there many times and have never been dissapointed with the food. It is always high quality, well prepared and delightfully presented. The wine list is fairly extensive and offers some nice choices particularly if you like red wines from Bordeaux. From the 23rd floor of the Okura hotel, the view of Amsterdam is breathtaking. Deserts are always a creative adventure both of taste and presentation. Finish the evening with an after dinner drink at the bar located next to the restaurant.
