Kantjil & De Tijger

Description

This rather large Indonesian restaurant, in which all food is authentically prepared, is located in the very heart of Amsterdam. Both the interior and the cuisine are reflections of the rich Indonesian culinary tradition. The original sate platters are excellent, with five different ones available. Main courses include various red meat, chicken, egg, fish or vegetable dishes as well as the traditional nasi or bami dishes. Particularly noteworthy are their rice-tables.

Dreadful in any language
By ,
The food was the worst of any cuisine I have ever eaten out. We had the most expensive riistafel and much was inedible. The chicken and fish pieces were old, dried out, and inedible. Service was poor and ended with the waiter taking minutes to stack the many dishes in one minutes-long effort tht included him picking uo left over food from the plates with is fingers to make stacking easier -- this despite our pleas to make more than one trip. This was the most appalling scene I have ever seen in a resturant. This is a tourist trap! Horrible, horrible, horrible!

Would definitely return........
By ,
New "Indo" style. Nice pictures from Josien Broeren on the walls. Did NOT need a reservation at 6pm mid-summer evening, got a table straight away. Very pleasant waitress who explained everything to us. Service not great after that but it was VERY busy at the time. Food was very tasty, served hot and plentiful but is NOT authentic - however it was still good. Not over priced considering prices in other parts of Europe. Not for a formal dinner but worth a visit anyway.

Fun place with a group

They have dinners with combinations of your choosing or of theirs which gives you an exciting dining experience. Need reservations, which we did not know but they accomodated us quickly.

the worst indonesian
By ,
close down the kitchen asap. they hussled all the tourist and stupid students, who think they got authentic indonesian. (hahahahahaaha) the satay they sell in V&D in an plastic bag is even better than this. 2 tough 2 handle. but there is also some good points . they serve coca cola from the little bottles. for that ill give them one point.

don't waste your money
By ,
very poor service.....I had to ask twice for my drinks I asked if sate was grilled at the moment on a grill.......but first they say yes and a other person say it was on a hot plate...but when they brought the sate after only 5 minutes it had been in the deepfryer.?! Very very bad. Even the original indonesian drinks they couldn't make it.They brought something competely different. I would never recommend this to somebody and nerver ever go back there.

Due to return
By ,
We visited this restaurant 2 years ago. We had to sit in the room on the side because it was very busy. Food excellent. Try the banquet. Am returning to amsterdam in a few weeks time and this is a definite return visit.

Good food, poor service
By ,
This is a very nice restaurant with good food. The food is very good but not great. There was nothing wrong with it is just that I have had much better elsewhere and the service was very, very, very poor. The main problem was that the staff, starting from the manager, was not attentive nor very interested in any of the customers at all after the initial order. And that goes for all the tables served, not only ours. We arrived already 17:30 so there were only 5-10 groups of people and 4 waiters serving and the manager walking around. The orders were taken quickly and the food arrived quickly but after that it was almost impossible to order more beverages, to get the table cleaned, to order desert, etc. We had to walk up to the counter or walk over to the manager for something to happen and even then we had to wait between 10-15 minutes for somebody to actually take our order. We stayed until 19:30 so it was quite crowded at the end but there was more than enough waiters for every table as more waiters kept arriving all the time. It was just that they did not care about service but as the manager seemed to have the same attitude I can understand why. It was as if Kantjil assumed they were perfect no matter what they do but obviously success has gone to their head so if that continues, the only way will be down. Unfortunately.

very good for groups

Its the best restaurant to get people talking. Services isn't the best, but the food makes up for it. I come back every 6 months and with different people and they love it.

Big Disappointment
By ,
Wow, what bad food. I was sooo surprised by the low over priced quality of the food. All the tour books, all of the reviews say to come here. Well, don't. My asian wife and I were suprised by the overly western bla taste and canned vegtables used in the cuisine. Granted its hip, but I think you are better off at any of the cheaper indo restos. We ordered the 46 euro, middle choice for two people. This was for "12" dishes. Rice, Rice Crakers and Potato chips composed three of the 12. Canned little corns and bland vegies were the forth. A couple of satay style mystery meats, tasteless fish in banana leaf and "beef or lamp" in a thick sauce completed this tasteless fare. Go elsewhere if you know good from bad.

Something different
By ,
Everytime I go to an Indonesian restaurant, I always see wayang dolls and other traditional Indonesian souvenirs on the wall. At Kantjil & de Tijger I saw something different. They have an exhibition with the theme New Asian. I have to give them credits for exploring their roots and put it in a new way. The food wasn't authentic, but ok. I guess it has something to do with their new image, New Asian (as told by one of the waiters). For those who want to experience a new way of Indonesian food but yet tasty as the origin, I think you should try the rijsttafel. But make sure that you're hungry!
