Caravaggio Heaven
Don't miss this (somewhat) hidden treasure, especially if you are a fan of Caravaggio. But even those who know nothing about the man or his work, should take a few minutes to view these 3 incredible paintings dedicated to Saint Matthew the Evangelist that are grouped together at the last altar to the left of the Cathedral's main altar. You'll be glad you did!!(Its located only a short walk away from the Piazza Novana). Even better, you can see them free of charge--just bring a few Euro coins to operate the lamps to see the paintings better, and you may want to make a small donation to the church itself. The incredibly moving (and personal to Caravaggio--the priceless look on Matthew's face capturing his indecision and struggle about whether he should renounce his dissolute life and follow Jesus out the door recalls the painter's own extremely turbulent personal life) "Calling of St. Matthew" is probably my favorite painting of all-time, the gut-wrenching 'martyrdom of St Matthew', and the humourous 'St Matthew and the Angel" are also enchanting. Try not to Miss it!!!
