Piazza Venezia

Description

Beset on all sides by roads, the square is heavily congested with traffic. In the background, the Altare della Patria is dedicated to King Vittorio Emanuele. Romans refer to it as the ""wedding cake"" or the ""typewriter"" because of its shape and color. Shortly after World War I, the body of the Unknown Soldier was brought here and placed in the center of the steps of the Vittoriano. It has a permanent armed guard. Palazzo Venezia was built during the second half of the 15th Century and was where the Venetian ambassadors to Rome stayed. It later became the residence of the Cardinal of the Basilica of St Mark.

Our tour guide called it a birthday cake.
By Tammy, 12/7/11
The Italians call that structure the Birthdaycake..Because it sticks out like a sore thumb in the city.. Its a white marble structure while the rest of the monuments are travertine. But it is a great marker to find your way to other parts of the city.

traffic director piazza venezia
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/6/11
There is a cross in the middle of the rome "piazza venezia" with 5 way without traffic light. There is a traffic police up in a base and work like a director of music with the cars. The name of this cop is marchionne and worked as a actor in the nero fiddel of woody Allen. Very funny and sexual... you can find on youtube

Hilarious trafic
By Not, 2/27/08
Just about one hundred meters away from here, there is an large intersection. There are about 5 streets coming to one. There are no traffic lights, and there are only occasionaly traffic police. We were walking past and found it so funny to watch! There was also a man who had parked in the middle of the road, who was outraged by getting a fine! We had fun!!!!

Centering Point
By casacs, 7/13/06
I knew that if I could see or find the Piazza Venezia and the Monument, I could find my way back to the hotel. Getting around Rome on foot can be a challenge but using this Piazza at a centering point is a plus. The large white marble monument with the horses on either end is visible at a distance.

All this for a hero
By Jon, 5/12/05
I thought this was some kind of temple... turns out it's a memorial to the unknown soldier. I was astonished that the Italians would put SUCH GUSTO into a monument to someones whose name they don't even know! You can't even imagine it's spectacle... a must see and right next to the Roman Forum!
