Taverna dei Mercanti
This beautiful restaurant, with huge candles on every table and its 17th-century feel, is the perfect place for a romantic dinner (period dramas are often filmed here.) There's a classic pizzeria menu: fried antipasti, delicious bruschette, pizzas and desserts. The freshest mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and dough are used to create such masterpieces as the fontina e tartufo pizza and the classic margherita. The desserts are homemade - the tiramisù, pannacotta and the torte della nonna are very good. Prices are only slightly higher than in other pizzerias. The ancient walls and the beams overshadow the rest of the furnishings. However, there are always new details to catch the eye: garlic, onions and peppers hang from the beams, as well as antique oil lanterns. People from centuries past have written along the high walls and their words are still visible; meat hooks and antique nails and cracks also ooze history.
We go to Rome once a year and always eat here. The pizza is amazing, one of my favorite in Italy. Not to mention the old world charm that radiates from every angle of the place. If your lucky you can sit outside on the balcony for the chance to hear the live music from the restaurant next door. We have received bad service on an occasion or two, but that is not why you go to a restaurant in Italy. One key point, if you are looking for pasta this is not your place, pizza and meat only.
We have been here many times, the contrast in Summer is so very different to winter that it is really two different experiences, all al fresco in the warm months, no one inside, totally the opposite in the solder ones. We always enjoy the experience but watch out for the slightly dodgy adding up of the bill, it all looks ok but scribbled down and not always quite what the total should be!
This was absolutely the highlight of my 23 day trip to Europe. Looking to feel adventure, we asked our friendly taxi driver to suggest his favorite restaurant and to take us there. It was the most amazing experience that i have ever had a restaurant. They had torches surrounding the place, home grown music, and amazing decor. We ordered the chateua briand for two. My first time ever ordering and certainly not my last. I've failed to ever find a steak that taste as good as that one did. Luckily, I'm going back this week!
Highly recommended. It was recommended to me by an Italian friend, so it passes the locals test. Located in an amazing little piazza that is in one of the coolest neighborhoods in Rome called Trastevere. Great atmosphere and ambience and delicious food. Service was very friendly. I had the steak and it was excellent, yet not too expensive. I recommended this place to other friends and they ate here on the last night of their trip and said it was a highlight.
I am a major U.S. airline captain. Another pilot who I recently flew with is about to take a trip to Italy, so I searched this restaurant to recommend it. My entire crew plus a couple of spouses and friends who went along on the trip ate here on the first night of a rare 3 day stay in Rome in January, 2003. Usually we have to leave about 24 hours after we arrive, but on this trip, we arrived Tuesday morning and did not have to leave until Friday morning. About 16 of us took 4 cabs and we ate and drank in this restaurant for over 4 hours. The food, atmosphere, and service were incomparable. In 18 years of airline flying, this was the best meal and the best trip. I strongly recommend both this restaurant and a trip to Rome generally.
would recommend this medeivel restaurant in old part of Rome. lighted torches on walls outside-like stepping back in time. noisey and busy with excellent atmosphere. short menu but food delicious & vegetarian option very good. reasonably priced. had not booked but staff accommodated us to avoid our disappointment. staff also very helpful when ordering taxi.
Situated in a quiet piazza (de Mercanti) . . . charming old farmhouse style eating and cooking . . . vast barn interior, with open charcoal brazier's where food is well cooked . . . . not a la carte . . . but very wholesome and busy . . . . .
