Anytime we are in Rome, we have dinner at Scarpone. We were introduced to Scarpone by a high Vatican prelate who had dinner there often. I heard that Pope Benedict ate there when he was a Cardinal. But aside from that, the food is great. The antipasti table is the best in Rome. The Bronzino is baked to perfection and split at your table. Waiters are courteous and skilled. Godd wines too. And it's a family place not a tourist trap. Go there. In Gianicolo up behind the Vatican. About a 20 dollar cab ride from the center of Rome. We are from Philadelphia.
A vatican priest friend wanted to take us to a special place for lunch and drove us up to Scarpone. It was lovely, a beautiful view and scrumptious food. The artichkies both braised and fried were yummy....everything was great! It was like stepping into a wonderful movie. Our friend also told us it is the Pope's favorite restaurant.
Numerous trips to Rome over the past fifteen years has made Scarpone my favorite. Two years after our first visit, our waiter, Maurizio, greeted us by name. Service is efficient, staff friendly and helpful--food wonderful. A large, busy place in which one never feels hurried. Large selection of antipasti, super pastas and grilled meats. Everyone Iv'e sent has raved.
