Galleria degli Uffizi
The Medici family reserved rooms for their prestigious collection during use of the gallery as magistrate's court in the 1700s. Made up of 40 rooms, the gallery contains works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio and Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera. Note the collection of Flemish, French, Dutch and German masters. The corridors, ceilings with splendid frescoes, are lined with Roman and 16th-century sculptures. By reservation, the Vasari Corridor above the Ponte Vecchio offers a link between Pitti Palace and Palazzo Vecchio. The Galleria houses 700 paintings including well-known self-portraits.
With all the comments about how great this museum is, I was most disapointed with the collection and the whole city of Florence. Very boring compared to Rome or Venice. Vatican Museum-much more impressive. Florentines are so full of themselves and are insecure about their standing behind Rome as a cultural center. Its OK that it can't compete with Rome. Not many place can.
I lived in Florence in the early 1960s. In those days the Uffizi was unbelieveably cheap and easy to get into. I went there almost every day for four months. You could get right up to the paintings then. There was little or no security. No one gave a thought to anyone hurting one of the magnificent works that hung on the walls. Now that's all gone. We live in a tense and dangerous world today. That is too bad. I am glad for the experience I had back then as I will never have that experience again.
The Uffizi Gallery covers an area of about 8.000 sq.m.. and contains one of the most important collections of art of all times, including classical sculpture and paintings on canvas and wood by 13th to 18th century Italian and foreign schools. The Gallery of the Uffizi was also the first museum ever to be opened to the public: in fact the Grand Duke granted permission to visit it on request from the year 1591. Its four centuries of history make the Uffizi Gallery the oldest museum in the world.
I suggest buying your tickets online before you go to avoid a line. Even though we did have prepaid tickets though we still had to wait. The experience was frustrating. Dont go first thing in the a.m. The crowds can spoil it.
I loved the Uffizi. It has so much history and passion. The art work of Botticelli really comes to life. The atmosphere was perfect for a museum of this caliber! Nice and quite and people were very respectful!
The negative was the three hour wait in line!!!
The artwork is absolutely amazing! There is really something for everyone.
Hint: We went with a large group on tour, and usually did not have to wait in line. Tickets for the group were purchased ahead of time, and we could walk right in. Definitely make reservations.
This is great -- once you manage to get in. Definitely make reservations far in advance or you will be standing in a loooonnnngg line to make reservations when you get there. Also, make sure you get there well in advance of your entry time - you have to stand in one loooonnnng line to get your ticket and THEN move to another loooonnng line to get in (after you have gotten your ticket). Maybe they could consider consolidating these two lines? I mean, come on!
