Basilica di San Lorenzo

Description

Encompassing the Biblioteca Laurenziana and the Cappelle Medicee, this basilica is a testimony to the political power and patronage of the Medici family. Its origins date back to 393 when St. Ambrose consecrated it in memory of the martyrdom of St. Lawrence. Adorned with fabulous artwork, including the marble Altar of the Sacrament carved by Desiderio da Settignano, the basilica features major artists of the period, including Donatello, Verrocchio, Filippo Lippi and Brunelleschi. This church contains the tombs of many members of the Medici family as well as that of one of their favorite artists, Donatello. Check website for timings.

San Lorenzo is too beautiful to be missed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/10/08
The unfinished exterior facade is entirely misleading. The beauty to be beheld inside both architecturally and artistically is absolutely breath taking. If you are at all religiously inclined you are in for a moment of grace the minute you enter this moving church. The divine presence will surround you with the exquisite works of Donatello and many other artists of the Quadracento. Come in a give your heart and soul a lift. You will never forget it.

Nice city
By T-H, 6/28/07
My friend & I went inside to admire the architecture of San Lorenzo, but we didn't go to see the museum nearby. I hope next time I'll visit it & few other things here.

Nice resting spot
By Yvonne M, 12/15/06
I use to love sitting in from of San Lorenze with my girlfriends after school eating gelato. This spot brings back so many memories. The is a lot of shade in this area if you just want to relax. Also there are alot of street vendors.

OH! The history!
By Jen, 8/16/04
My FAVORITE church in Italy thus far. I have been here 3 times and each time, tears were brought to my eyes. Works by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Brunelleschi intrigue and amaze! I took all my guests to the first Renaissance Church. The facade designed by Michelagelo was never carried out and the exterior isn't impressive, but once inside you'll be amazed!
