Ponte Vecchio

Description

Best known of all of Florence's treasures, this glorious bridge was the only one of six spared by the retreating Germans on August 4, 1944. Over the centuries flooding unfortunately took its toll; few traces of the 10th-century bridge remain. Today's bridge, built in 1345, was filled with butcher's shops which would routinely discard the carcasses into the Arno causing quite a stench. Grand Duke Fernandino I issued an edict to replace the butchers with goldsmiths to eradicate the smell and gentrify royalty's route to Palazzo Pitti, reached via the Vasari Corridor that passes over the bridge. The tradition of padlocking things to the statue of Benvenuto Cellini, often practiced by lovers who padlock a lock to the gate of the statue and toss the key into the river, faces a fine of EUR 50!

Beautiful from the outside
By ,
Don't miss see this beautiful bride, but on the bride it's crowed and expensive. It one of those things, when you see it in the picture it's like seeing it in real life.

The bracelets and keys to throw in the water
By ,
What an awesome experience, The Ponte Vecchio, the food and shops, just keep in mind that those bracelets were not cheap in price, yet they broke apart 3 months later. The traditional key thrown in the water was a romantic experience for my marriage.

A Piece of History
By ,
With just a short walk from Santa Croce, you follow the crowd and are swept away onto the Ponte Vechio Bridge and the shops of gold. It is Florence! You can only imagine what it was like hundreds of years as traders sold their goods and lived above the bridge shops. Looking out over the river when you get to the center of the bridge is an outstanding view. Even better is the view from the side of the bridge where you are able to take closeup pictures of the entire bridge. There are less people there and the scenery much better. It is a perfect place to rest and soak in the atmosphere too. The bridge is one of the icons of Florence. It is not to be missed and a perfect photo opportunity. Loved it!

Fun for the family, be prepared for sticker shock!
By ,
There is so much history and atmosphere there, you can't help but find it appealing. We window shopped a lot, got some souveniers, gelato, the ususal. Then, we went back and did the real shopping. If you want any type of jewelry, from the mundane to the unique, this is the place to be. Just find something you like and buy it. Don't go all the to Florence, get to the Ponte Vecchio, and leave because you think the price is too high, if only for the memories of WHERE you got those gold earrings or watch!

Beautiful but crowded
By ,
The ponte vecchio is absolutely beautiful and the history is really cool but you definitely aren't the only one who knows this. Since I know that most travelers aren't planning on getting up before 8 or 9am i suggest saving the ponte vecchio for dusk or after dinner. It is such a great place to to eat a gelato or spend a romantic evening overlooking the rest of illuminated florence. You will most likely enjoy live music by a local musician who comes to play for those few that come to enjoy the bridge for what it is and not just a stop on a tour.

Yes this is a beautiful historical bridge but for us, all the jewelry rather spoils it. Dont miss one of the most beautiful, peaceful spots in Florence....the Pitti Palace and Boboli gardens, just over the bridge!

Simply Amazing!
By ,
This is one of the main attractions in Florence, so don't miss it!! It's just fun to walk around, even though you can't afford most of the things. Oh, and there's great music that gets played there after hours!!

Breathtaking
By ,
We were blown away by the beauty of this city. We're in our 50's and finally made it to Italy. We walked all over. Boboli gardens were vast and lush. The art everywhere feeds my spirit. The Ponte Vecchio was lovely in the morning and evening light. The sounds, the sights, the feel of the city is extraordinary. We want to go back! Gotta make more money first, though. If you have the opportunity, GO!
