Glengowla Mines

Description

This unusual attraction is situated on the Galway/Clifden road (N59), two miles west of Oughterard and about twenty minutes drive from Galway. The Glengowla Mines are the only mines in Ireland which are open to the public. The tour explores surprisingly spacious marble chambers and caverns studded with lead and silver pyrite. Veins of calcite and quartz can also be seen, as well as other precious metals such as the rare octahedral crystals of fluorite and quartz. Other points of interest include the blacksmith's shop, a spring water well and the heritage and visitors' center. Prices are EUR6.50 for adults; EUR6 for students/OAP; family rate is EUR18. The mines are open to the public between March and November.

i loved it

i loved my trip there all the staff were so friendly and the gold panning was great there tour guide jonnay also was very insightful and really knew wat he was talking about who knew there was so many different tpyes of rocks in one place and the seletion they had in there shop was amazing the only draw back is they have no credit card machine but other than that everything was brilli definately advise it as a most see atracttion.
