Kirwan's Lane Restaurant

Description

Come here if you want to spoil yourself and a friend. Tucked away on the eponymous laneway, Kirwan's Lane restaurant offers excellent and innovative Irish food. You'll enjoy new combinations of specifically Irish ingredients such as black pudding, new potatoes and a variety of local seafood. However, the menu is broad enough for most palates, including imaginative vegetarian options, roast lamb and monkfish. The two rooms are warm and comfortable; the service is courteous but unobtrusive.

not great
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/28/08
I don't know - looking at some of the reviews on here, it looks like the staff are writing them. Was disappointed, food average and overpriced. But Galway restaurants in general seem to be all like this. A pity.

Couldnt recommend highly enough!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/17/07
My boyfriend and I went to Kirwans Lane last night for my birthday dinner. People are very quick to complain about somewhere when its not good and not so quick when it is, so I felt the need to write about this absolutely fabulous restaurant....where to start? From the minute we walked in the door and were greeted by a smiling helpful waitress it just got better and better. We decided to share a starter and were provided with an extra plate, a lovely touch, every mouthful was to die for, from start to finish. I asked the waitress to recommend a white wine for me, which she got spot on. My other half was drinking water, he was provided with a glass of ice and a spoon to help himself to this, another lovely touch. All in all I could not praise or recommend Kirwans Lane enough. The fabulous staff made an already pleasurable experience even better.

Disappointing!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/8/07
We went here for our first wedding anniversary based on reviews found on this website. Verdict - a bit disappointing. Let me say at the outset that the waiters/waitresses were lovely and friendly if a little inexperienced. Some homemade bread arrived with different dips which was very nice and our starters were lovely. However I ordered a risotto for mains which was basically inedible - way overdone - no discernible grains of rice left. I have never sent a meal back anywhere! but I sent it back with the pleasant waiter who offered me a choice of something else but I just wanted another risotto. One of the two suited hosts came over and told me that he was sorry I "didn't like" the risotto but that he had tasted it and that was the way they cooked it here and there was nooo possibility of it being cooked any other way. Even though their way was wrong I asked? He suggested I pick something else and left the menu on the table without waiting for a reply. In the end I played it safe with salmon and there was nothing wrong with it when it came out. A few other mishaps included the second suited host getting our dessert order wrong. I heard a few other complaints from the surrounding tables so maybe they were having an off night and in fairness they did knock a few side orders off the bill and gave us an after dinner drink on the house. But if this restaurant was in Limerick or Dublin it just wouldn't survive.

Excellent food but.........
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/11/06
Food was excellent and competitively priced when compared to Dublin. Service was fair but the waitresses could do with a smile on their faces every now and then and considering that I was a good bit younger than their regular clientele (i'm 24) the staff seemed to keep their distance from me and concentrate on more mature diners. As a non-wine drinker I was also surprised to be served a pint in a plastic glass. Granted it was the Sunday of Race Week but I think that if you are paying over a hundred euros for a meal for two then you should at least get your drink served in a proper glass.

Great restaurant!
By ali, 7/11/06
My husband and I went to Kirwan's Lane last week (July 5, 2006)to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. The restaurant is nice, the location is great, the service was good, and the food excellent. The ambiance is simple and modern; nothing ornate or fancy. If calamari is on the menu...get it! It was a special as an appetizer the night we were there and it's the best calamari I've ever had. I had the salmon for the main course and it was great.

A hit!
By kate, 4/15/06
Eating in Galway can be a bit of a hit and miss affair. Kirwan's Lane was most definitely a hit! It's expensive compared to continental prices (what isn't in Ireland, I hear you ask?) but at least here quality shines through. You don't feel you're being ripped off. Bite after bite is delictable! We ate here on a beautiful Indian Summer's day and chose to eat al fresco. What a lovely and very romantic dining experience. A bit of advice though, book early for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Naturally enough for a place this good it tends to be booked out. One more piece of advice - try the fish! Yummy!

Definitely worth a visit
By Maggie, 11/21/05
Wonderful food, the lemon sole was so light and the calamari was the best my friend had eaten, the lamb was out of this world. Although very full we managed to eat the cranberry Brule which was fabulous. 3 x3 courses plus wine and water 131. I would think they had outside dining in the summer as it is situated in a small no traffic lane.
