This is a peculiar body of water situated near the coast, south of Skibbereen. It is unique among Irish lakes in that it is connected to the open sea by a channel, but its surface lies below sea level at the highest tides, so the water alternately flows outwards and inwards through this channel at different times of the day. On an island in the centre of the lough can be seen the remains of Cloghan Castle. The lake has been declared a nature reserve, due to the presence of many rare species in its waters.
