The church of St Francis is in a part of Cork still known as "the marsh". The exterior bears a stone dated 1586. John Bently designed this church after a tour of the Middle East; his travels are evident in the building's Byzantine style. Opened in 1953, the design was considered improper by many at the time. Inside, lavish Italian mosaics can be seen throughout, the most impressive of which line the walls of the four side altars and the apse. The high weightless domes lend an air of openness and freshness to this beautiful church.
