Fisherman's Bastion

Description

No one seems to know why this is so named - it has certainly never been called on to defend anything. The stories say that in the old days this was where the fishermen defended Castle Hill from. It stands behind Matyas Church, overlooking the river and was built around 1900 by the same person who was responsible for the reconstruction of the church. There is a small fee to pay to climb up it, but it is worth it for the views. It makes for some of the finest photo opportunities in all of Budapest. You can walk down the hill through the park from here, which is worth doing as it means you will arrive at the small flat area immediately above the entrance to the tunnel before continuing your descent.

One of my favorites
By Danielle, 11/13/07
I loved the Fisherman's Bastion EXCEPT for the mass crowd that is always there. It offers a wonderful view of the city and is an awesome place to take pictures of and from. One of my favorite attractions that we visited.

incredible by night
By Daniel, 10/3/06
It is an unbelievable place... I was there by night and I'm sure it coulnd't look better by day. Everything seems taken right out of a story. A very romantic place to just walk around with your loved one. The view over the Danube was also beautiful - all kinds of light were reflected on the river surface. You just have to see it by night. You won't regret it.

Good place for a break
By refachero, 4/25/06
The castle district eventually leads here, which will give you some great views, probably second to Gellert Hill. You can pay a little extra to go to the top level, although I think I went late at night once and the whole thing was open. It's in close proximity to the Matyas church as well, so why wouldn't you go here?

Touristy, but what a view!
By Anna, 4/11/06
Fisherman's Bastion is basically an old fortress perched on Castle Hill on the Buda side of the Danube. Its arched windows frame what is possibly the best view of the river and Pest that Budapest has to offer. On the downside, the place is rather touristy, but it's worth a stop for photos if you're up on the hill to see the Royal Palace and Matthias temple. After all, it's free--and what a view...

Breathtaking
By DawnP, 1/10/06
Do not miss this! I would choose Budapest over Vienna anyday - and can not wait to go back!Walking throughout this entire area is a pleasure. Bring your camera and plenty of film! The transportation is very easily done, and don't forget to stop at the local cafe and watch the world go by!! Great for families or a lovely romantic getaway!!

A very Romantic place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/14/04
On a summer night this is one of the most romantic spots in all of Budapest possibly in all of Central Europe. The lights of Budapest glow and reflect off the river, the chain bridge across the Danube is all lit up and if you have the right person with you this might even be 5 star attraction. However for me personaly ( sad to say ) it was barely a 3 star, so I will split the difference for. you.
