St. Stephen's Basilica

Description

This church is said to be second in size only to St. Peter's in Rome and can allegedly hold 7,000 people. It was completed in 1905 and has been undergoing cleaning and restoration work for the last eight years. It contains the mummified hand of St. Stephen himself, which is paraded around the city on his name day. The cathedral has a height of 96 metres - exactly the same as the Parliament building. As part of the guided tour you can visit the viewing platform above the cupola from where, needless to say, you will be able to enjoy splendid views.

Encore
By Rob T., 10/4/10
The architecture alone is worth the visit; however, if you choose to climb the stairs be forewarned - Take a deep breath, there are alot of steps. The climb was worth the unparelled view though. I have been to Budapest twice and both times the Basillica was on my itenerary. Each time I discover "new" things about this structure! Oh yes..and the concerts...IF you're licky enough to hear one..beautiful acoustics!

So very beautiful.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/18/10
A must see! Such beauty cannot be described in words alone. And it has an organ with frequent recitals.

Budapest's Best
By Slade, 1/28/08
This is the best church in Budapest by far. Only thing that rates close to it is the cave church across the river. It is not as ornate as many Roman Catholic churches but it is still up there in my book. I would recommend coming back and visiting the church again.

Awe inspiring
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/6/08
I was compelled by the faith of the young people there for a youth rally to visit this site. The basilica itself is a beautiful expression of the renewal of faith in eastern Europe, still struggling after years of communist domination.

One of Budapest's must-sees
By refachero, 4/25/06
First off, this place is huge. There's some great statues, and for a little extra forint they let you go up the dome for some good views from the Pest side of town. Next to the parliament, probably the most important building architecturely in town.
