Description

Situated in the heart of the Castle District, the Pierrot Cafe is an excellent place to stop for a bite to eat when exploring the ancient walls or visiting the many museums. It is well established and popular amongst Hungarians as well as visitors: Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith dined here when they were in town for the filming of Evita. The decor is cool and calm with cane chairs and cushions. A large grand piano dominates the front room although there is more space out the back and a few tables and chairs are placed on the pavement in front. Live music is featured in the evening and the atmosphere is laid back - this is a real haven of peace after the tourist whirl. You can sit and sip a coffee or an alcoholic drink for hours undisturbed - coffee and tea are priced at around HUF 300. Salads, crêpes and the famous Pierrot steak served with green pepper sauce are available all day. Cocktails are also good here and cost around HUF 700.

Best neighbourhood, best value

I visited this very unique restaurant with one of my friends and I have to say we had a great time! :) Castle District is just beautiful in the evening with all the lights on and the whole atmosphere! There was a man playing live music on piano which made me fly back in time to the begining of 20th century restaurants. The food was great quality, I enjoyed all the Hungarian specialties that I tried (Goulash soup and the so called "Krémes" cake)! This reastaurant is really a must!

Lucky find! Don't miss...

My wife and I lucked into this spot after initially being drawn to the beautiful courtyard for a photo op. Turns out it was hands down the best meal we had on our vacation (Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and the Wachau). The Guinea Fowl with Turnip Ravioli and Turnip Puree is amazing and could easily suffice as a last meal facing the gallows. My wife had the duck confit and loved it nearly as much as the fowl. Since our return, she's been inspired to purchase a bag of turnips to replicate the dish. Still waiting on the results...

friendly place

Hi! I've just visited Pierrot with my husband and kids for the first time, and had souch a great time there!! The food was excellent,and the service was also good. The children's favourite was Tartar of Beef, but they also tried Goulash soup. If you want to drink some really tasty, try their wine specialites!:) Anyway, the whole atmosphere is friendly and peacful, we had a long walk, and a great lunch in the Castle district:)

Peaceful haven with fabulous food

If you're looking for top class cuisine in a peaceful atmosphere then this is the place for you. Away from the noise and bustle in the peaceful setting of old Buda. Try to get the table in the walled garden at the rear of the restaurant, the setting is beautiful. It isn't cheap, but the food is faultless, we enjoyed the place so much we went back for a second visit. A wonderful eating experience, with soft piano music to relax you. Good service, attentive, but not overly so. Chose the wine yourself rather than letting the waiter 'help you' as he tends to choose the more expensive items from the wine list. Go on, spoil yourself, you'll remember the experience as one of the most memorable of your stay in Budapest.

A great choice for last night in Budapest

Wonderful food and service. Beautiful dining room and true NO SMOKING room. Out of one wine we wanted but made up for that with service and food. Acoustics are such that room is loud but not overwhelming. Worth the ride up the hill

Home from Home

We lived in the Castle District in Budapest for 4 years, 2001 -2005, and Cafe Pierrot was our favorite restaurant in the City of Restaurants, and it was also our local. We knew it before it was modernised and loved the ambiance and Joseph the pianist, who played "our song" every time we paid a visit, which was often. It is now a smart but casual restaurant offering wonderful food, an attentive service and, of course, Joseph. It was so good that we would make a special effort to visit next time we are in Europe. Overall, probably the best in Budapest

Delicious and beautifully prepared dishes, great menu, attentive staff, fine and exciting design. Only Four Seasons mathches it in Budapest, but Pierrot is more relaxed.

island in hungary

finally a nice place in hungary, where the waiters are positive, know what i want and make me feel cool. (did not see too many such places in budapest) and the food, boy, i haven't had a steak like this since in europe. highly recommended, nice place

A Budapest MUST!

This cafe came highly recommended to us and now we see why! The food is some of the best we've ever had. The delicious oozing blue cheese crepes and the steak with green peppercorn sauce were phenomenal! The only minor disappointment was a watered-down mixed drink. But, that did NOT take away from the overall excellent experience, fantastic service and beautiful live piano music. Trust me, go there.

Getting everything right!

We really were that impressed and we only had the set menu on offer that day. Only wish we'd had a chance to eat a la carte also. Apart from being excellent food, tiptop service and delightful decor, it somehow manages to suit popping in on spec mid afternoon for some late lunch (us), a coffee and a cake (others) as well as much fancier dining (towards the back of the cafe). If you go to Budapest, make sure you pay them a visit!
