Museum of the City of Athens (Vouros-Eftaxias)

Description

This stately mansion (dating back to 1833) served as the royal residence between 1836 and 1843. Now a museum, it recreates the everyday life of the first Greek king during the 1840s, with exhibits such as the kitchen, the throne room, the library and the study. Also very interesting is the 1:1000 scale model of Athens which shows the city as it was in 1842. There are many 19th-century paintings displayed throughout the museum, as well as lots of memorabilia from that era. There is also a collection of paintings, sculptures and engravings (from the 13th to the 19th century) by foreign artists who were inspired by Athens. Some of these artists had never set foot in Athens but nonetheless wanted to express their mental images of this great city.

See the old Athens as a model from old times

I think the museum is worth of visit, if only to see the large smallscale model of the city of Athens, as it was earlier this century. Only then you can fully realize this enormous city, and how it has developed.
