Temple of Olympian Zeus

Description

Begun in 515 BC, this huge temple was dedicated to the worship of Zeus (in Greek: Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός). Its perimeter included 104 Corinthian columns, with additional columns inside the building that housed a huge gold and ivory statue of Zeus. After the temple's destruction by invaders in the 4th century AD, the marble from the ruins started to vanish as it was being used as building material for newer buildings. Nowadays, only some of the temple's columns can be seen. Their immense height is a testimony to the huge size of this sanctuary.

Great place to hang out
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/18/07
Just walk around this temple and enjoy the vibe of the place. Beautiful in it ruin, it must have been something to see in its complete state. Will St. Peter's in Rome look like this one day? Remember man that you are dust and to dust you shall return.

Puppies at this site
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/16/06
This place is awesome. The big draw is the dogs and the puppies living among the ruins.Don't worry about the dogs. The people of Athens feed the dogs and the puppies. All dogs are friendly.Just enjoy yourself.

It's so tall!
By Stella P, 1/10/06
It's amazing how big the columns are. When you think about what the Ancient Greeks were able to accomplish with just the technology of the time, it is astounding.
