Cape Sounion

Description

One of the most romantic spots in Greece can be found south of Athens at Cape Sounion. The ruins of an ancient temple built on a cliff-top offer spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and a picture perfect sunset. The temple (dating back to the 5th century BC) was dedicated to Poseidon, god of the sea. It can be reached in an hour from Athens, by following a scenic route along the Apollo Coast. There are excellent beaches along the road to Sounion, so don't forget to pack your bathing suit. The inter-city (orange) bus to Sounion departs every hour from Egyptou Square and stops at Filellinon Street near Syntagma Square.

Details needed- maps, directions, phone numbers

The Cape is nice, but very difficult to find practical information about how to navigate by road, with maps of towns, telephone numbers for local businesses, phone numbers and addresses of tourist offices and museum offices at the sites. I'm tired of reading "how beautiful" but no actual Information.

I tried booking a tour to Cape Sounion my last day in Greece. Picked Sunday because the weather was better. At the last minute I get a phone call from Key tours saying sorry but there are not enough people to run the trip. What use is that to me I am left high and dry typical scam of and unprofessional organisation? There are alot of websites advertising tours most of which want you to book and pay by credit card in advance but try finding a phone number so you can call a tour operator directly? Some phone mubers names of companies in these reviews would be great useful helpful aside from oh what a fantastic place over and over and over. How about some practical information as well. Thanks very much.

magical place

poseidons temple in cape sounion sits on a bluff overlooking the aegian sea. it is a quick 1-1.5 hour trip from athens depending on traffic and point of origin. the trip hugs the coast and the panorama is truly special. there are several spots along the way to stop for a quick dip into the sea. the temple site is small as compared to delphi or the acropolis. a very good restaurant sits at the base of the temple serving appetizers,drinks and full meals. if you can ,plan the trip around sunset to really appreciate the beauty of this great greek temple.

36 euro. The bus takes you alongside the sea. The drive is very beautiful. The site of the Temple is peaceful. 3 hours of driving to and from and 1 hour at the site.

One day of peace and solitude

While in Athens, the crowded population and congestion made travel difficult; especially by rental car. The bus system is difficult to know which to get on and where to get off or even the general direction you are heading. The trains are much less complicated and really much easier to use. Cape Sounion offered us the chance to drive the eastern shore with very scenic views. Once you hit Cape Sounion, it is very easy to find the ruins of the Poseidon Temple. No traffic, congestion or difficulty. Plus you can find a great beach along to way to do a little sun-bathing.

This place is a great place to visit each year it'll draw you back. Its well worth a visit for the food and fashion. NA da day there is all you'll need for life time fun

Pretty cool...

Sounion is so beautiful. It is very different from Athens. Be sure to visit the Temple of Poseidon while you're up here. Also, if you're ok with paying for sitting on a beach chair, be my guest. Otherwise, be careful: the locals are friendly, but if you're caught on a beach chair, you're paying at least 8 euros for it!

Well worth the visit !!

Cape Sounion is an excellent and easy trip from Athens centre. The buses leave every hour or so from Athens (all the guide books give details of the departure point) and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. The terminus at Cape Sounion is at the Temple - couldn't be easier. Choose your buses carefully and you can travel from Athens to Cape Sounion by the coastal route and return via the inland route through the hills and villages. It's worth the trip just for the journey ! But the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is a real gem ! Situated at the tip of the peninsula the temple commands an impressive position with great views all around. There is a great rocky outcrop above the cliffs which is a great place for a picnic - looking over to the temple and the great sea views around. A super place which any visitor to Athens who has the time shouldn't miss !
