National Archaeological Museum
Dating back to 1889, this majestic building houses Athens National Archaeological Museum (Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο). The Cycladic idols, the tall Kouros statues and the splendid classical sculptures stand out for their beauty. Among the most popular exhibits is the 3,600 year old gold mask of Agamemnon. There is even an ancient device from the first century BC, which is considered to be the world's oldest computer. A section of the museum also contains exhibits from Ancient Egypt.
Fascinatingly renovated, a real treasurehouse of Greek Art. The most comprehensive collection of Greek Sculpture, a real experience in beauty! Great vase collection, stunning jewels, gold, silverware, ebony, glass, bronze. And the richest collection of the prehistoric Aegean and Troy to be found anywhere in the world. What a treasure! Plus two bonuses : A 550 rich collection of ancient idols, a treat in understanding ancient individual taste + maybe the most educating Egyptian collection in the world! NOT TO MISS!!!
One of the Top 10 museums in the world, to be sure. Pricey due to weak dollar.
When I retire, I want a job as a docent or guard here: "Don't touch the glass, please! This is not allowed! No flash, please!"
What a kick. It was all I could do to not touch the glass and use my flash just to twist their tails a bit.
Avoid the museum shop. Pretty typical overpriced goods.
I'm not a fan of museums—I get bored in them easily—but I loved this one. Many of the pieces of sculpture simply spoke to me. But I recommend going as early as possible after opening, while the crowds are still rather thin. That way you can contemplate the pieces in some degree of peace and quiet, which is what they deserve.
This is the museum to see for anyone interested in the origins of western culture. The building itself is beautiful and it's collection unmatched. I only had an hour and a half time for it, but could have spent most of a day there.
I went ot the museum in 2001 and it was one of the best places I visied while I was Europe. By far, it was the most treasurable and memorable as well as the most authentic and admirable. I would and will go back as soon as possible to see the museum. The walking is rough in the heat, but tolerable considering what you get out of it.
