Athens awakened to a new life in 1834, when it became the capital of the young Greek state after the fierce War of Independence. The decades that followed brought about an explosive growth that totally changed the face of the city. Among the first buildings of this new era was the St Paul's Church. This basilica was constructed between 1838 and 1842 by the renowned architect Stamatis Kleanthis.

We'll go back!
By jean, 10/03/08
We went to St Paul's when we had three days in Athens and felt right at home, from a welcome at the door to a cup of coffee and cake in the garden. The hymns were old and new and the singing was very good. We specially liked the stained glass windows and memorials and the organ solo at the end. We enjoyed our visit and have told some friends to do the same when they're in Athens in November.

If you can find another church, probably do

While people are welcoming, the worship is really interfered with by poor management of laity who not only are ungrateful for visitors over a number of weeks who support events (e.g., buying a 25 euro ticket for an event, then asking if you have bought the magazine, bought a raffle ticket -- as I was told "the 25 euros has NOTHING to do with the raffle ticket" -- then, one should be present at the raffle to obtain any prize -- what time is the raffle in the 10!M-3PM event on the following Saturday). I truly support in the collection plate, contribute for the instant coffee made with, it would seem, powdered milk -- I was told if it ran out, the server would go in and make more -- given the absence of a cow, I assume powdered milk is used. Well, I feel that my contributions of generosity are met with stinginess of welcome. Don't need this, saw this in 2004, hoped it were different, but it is not.
