Ancient Agora of Athens

Description

Socrates strolled through the Agora (Αρχαία Αγορά της Αθήνας) 2,500 years ago engaging people in long, philosophical discussions. This unique archaeological park served as the city's marketplace from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD. Scattered throughout the Agora are statues and ruins of numerous buildings, the most interesting of which is the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos or Thission, built in the 5th century BC. Many archaeological finds are on display inside the reconstructed Stoa Attalou, a majestic building from the 2nd century BC.

The Agora
By ,
A wonderful tranquility pervades the place, one can easily relive the pages of a history book and relive the diginity of the ancient philosophers Socrates, Plato... The Temple of Hephaistos, not so popular among the tourists is well worth the long walk o reaching.............. a must return to destination

It's amazing!

A lovely flea market, with view to the Acropolis and a chance to shop for souvenirs and food too. What am I saying...? Not just that, you can literally find anything there! It's close to a place called Thiseio that is full of great restaurants, bars and clubs - reminded me a lot of Soho. Can't wait to go back.

Pretty cool...
The Ancient Agora won't mean anything to the untrained eye. If you're into Greek history, then this place is a must. Otherwise, take time to see other places in Greece.

Don't miss this!
By ,
We happened on it by chance, and as we had a free ticket to get in (by going to the Acropolis first you get 6 tickets for other archaeological sites) we went on a whim. It was fab - particularly good was the Temple of Haephestus - perfectly preserved and a great vantage point for pictures of the Acropolis! But don't overlook it - take a moment to drink in the atmosphere from outside it, and imagine the agora in all its glory.
